1. John McCowen - Dealing with: Models of Duration
Recorded Live on April 29th 2023, at MILL (Needcompany) Brussels.
The harmonic spectrum of the contrabass clarinet is a vast, malleable landscape. As I have become in complete servitude of this instrument, it has allowed me greater and greater access to move amongst its sonic spectrum. Through the use of precise air pressure, I am allowed to freeze these phenomenons in certain, precise groupings. Each of these harmonic combinations has its own environmental pulse and gravity. To showcase each utterance of these environments, silence is of the utmost importance. This process makes the sensation of time truly elastic.
To compose and perform this music feels as if I’ve stumbled across some alien plant-life - to attempt to maintain the livelihood of something I don’t understand and has no owner’s manual. I can only learn to help it thrive through careful observation and failure.
2. Éliane Radigue - Σ = a = b = a + b
Recorded Live on April 29th 2023, at MILL (Needcompany) Brussels.
Σ = a = b = a + b is an experimental turntable work by Éliane Radigue, using two seven inch vinyl which are engraved across both sides.
Side A and B can be listened to separately or simultaneously, synchronously or asynchronously.
Sides A and B of the disk can be combined indefinitely at any speed: 78, 45, 33 or 16 rpm.
The combination of this simple score and the two disks, generates a work that can be infinitely extended and altered.
Σ = a = b = a + b is one of Radigue’s first sound propositions. Originally, the turntables were made available to the public, and visitors could therefore compose their own sonic landscape; for Oscillation, the work was performed by Nur/Se.
The pieces were performed on the occasion of the Festival
Oscillation ::: o tempo 2023.
Oscillation Festival is a project by Q‑O2 werkplaats.
